  1. More trouble and strife down Africa way. Of 54 African nations, as we speak, only 1 is classified as a ‘full democracy’: Mauritius. The rest are flawed democracies, hybrid democracies incorporating strongly authoritarian anti-democratic elements, or outright dictatorships. The truth is that too much of Africa is still mired in tribalism and too few States have made the requisite efforts to bring their countries into the sunny uplands of the least worst way of politically organising human affairs. The key here has to be education. Of the salient things functioning democracies need to embrace in order to have any chance of working, such as participation, free and fair elections, representation, accountability, transparency, responsiveness, pluralism, and the rule of law, far too few African nations tick even half of these boxes. Until they do, chiefly through education, Africa will remain benighted and doomed to anti-democratic trouble and strife.

  3.  @Lominosnufc  I disagree with non-consented to Western interference in any country. I’m anti-colonialist. All I’m pointing out is that you can’t lay the fact that only 1 out of 54 African countries is a full democracy wholly at the door of the West or any other interventionist power. Yes, this is partly to blame in a few cases but for much of your continent, the foundations of a political culture necessary to sustain liberal democracy have been weak for most of the postcolonial era (roughly six decades for most African states). The persistence of religious and ethnic rivalries has been underestimated by African democrats and their friends abroad. Also significant has been the role of the police and the army, agreed, often vestiges of colonialism, which have been a cause and consequence of power systems favoring a coterie of elites.

  5. Her pronunciation was correct. Niger is a former French colony, and along with Arabic, French is an official language.

  6.  @kanoleausi4204  Ok. Niger. 1 failed democracy. The West to blame. You have a case. However, not sure you could use the same excuse about many of the other 55 non- full democracies in Africa.
