What’s always been more than a little confusing about the death penalty in the US is that the vast majority of those supporting it also follow Jesus. Yet Jesus was quite explicit about stuff like this: “You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” (Matthew 5:38-39) Personally, I’m against the death penalty for one main reason: risk involved in executing innocent people. If I were on a jury where the possibility of the death penalty were involved, I’d be mighty reluctant to convict as there could always be the possibility of a mistake. 12 Angry Men is essential viewing here.

@joshradcliffe8563 I never said we shouldn’t jail people. If you want to call that ‘kidnapping’, fine. I have no issue with ‘kidnapping’. There’s a bit of a categorical difference between the state ‘kidnapping’ someone and the state murdering them.

@joshradcliffe8563 Indeed. I have no issue with state incarceration, or ‘kidnap’ as you like to call it, but I tend to draw the line at state murder. Not sure why you’re finding this so difficult to grasp.
