  1. It’s ersatz. A kind of mock Hollywood Catholic Cathedral. The kind of thing John Waters or Andy Warhol would dig. Chartres, Durham, Leon, Burgos are the real deals. La Sagrada Familia is worth seeing but not worth necessarily going to see.

  2. I recall on a trip to Barcelona, going to visit this remarkable building about 35 years ago in my callow ignorant youth and back then I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. A crappy half-finished building. Later that day, a friendly local told me it was in ongoing construction and due to be completed in about 50 years! Have been back since, and although it’s glorious in its own way, it can’t touch the properly extraordinary old Romanesque and Gothic wonders of a Durham or a Chartres. It’s ersatz. To paraphrase Dr Johnson (he would’ve hated La Sagrada Familia!): La Sagrada Familia is worth seeing but not necessarily worth going to see!
