  1. Indeed, the cost necessary to upgrade an 80s jet to get a handful of aircraft, that may no longer be able to press their mission, would be astronomical. A lot of what they learnt went into what makes the F-35 so great, it's modularity. And what they learnt about implementing said modularity is being built into NGAD (And FCAS and Tempest etc) Although FCAS et al. will be all evolution of 5th gen fighters, I suspect NGAD will be tailored for the Pacific, focusing on range, payload, stealth and sensors & effectors.

  2.  @jgw9990  2? Try 4 decades. It was designed in the 80s, F-22 is 80s tech. It's the last of the monolithic avionics jets, which require everything to be ripped out and rebuilt for upgrades. F-35 is the 2 decades old jet, but the first (American) modular jets, first jet to have it's software not written in FORTRAN 🤣
