  1. OK, the thing about us (🇬🇧) not using APCs before the cold war. During the second world war we built and used the 'Universal Carrier' Tracked, lightly armoured (7-10mm) 3 ton open top vehicle. It is, in fact, the single most produced fighting vehicle in existence at 👉👉 113,000 👈👈 Ford 4.0L petrol V8 Many different configurations, Scout, Machine Gun, Mortar, Artillery, Battle Taxi, 40mm anti-tank, flamethrower. Used by 33 different nations from my 1935 to 1960.

  4.  @vanguard6498  3 crew actually!! 🤣 But when they're in the 10s of thousands, I think you're good. Crew of 3, driver, gunner and assistant gunner And when it's this or walking? I'll take 10mm of armour over nothing too! Maybe the pure battle taxi version can carry 5? 4 maybe, the engine just sits in the middle. Most of them were mobile heavy weapons platforms and artillery tractors.

  5.  @Del_S  exactly Most 'APCs' of the day (maybe just call them mechanised infantry vehicles or battle taxis?) Were truck or half tracks with cloth between the meat and the metal. I'll take the 10mm of steel thanks! The light machine gun conversion even gave you a mini redoubt/sponson to sit behind and poke your bren or your Vickers through. A pair of Vickers find on two of these behind a hedgerow with overlapping fuels of fire will certainly put the fear of god into any advancing infantry, especially if caught in the open life without an RPG of some kind. Designed to stop rifle rounds certainly.

  15.  @tonyclough9844  Originally tisit were multiple different 'carriers/variants' coming off separate factory lines. The Universal Carrier was an improvement, the UCs are all identical and could subsequently be turned into an ambulance or a bren carrier or mortar carrier. And turned back again I believe, you just re-equip them when needed.

  16.  Fidd88  Yeah, but... Who doesn't want a drop top APC? Suns out, Guns out! Throw another shrimp on the engine and away you go. The Bren carrier sounded like a great idea, high speed mobile suppression, turn up and light up. The mortar carrier also sounded like a fantastic idea, it's indirect, so not in the front line. And brings all the scoot you would ever want for your shoot. Both of them could carry tins of ammo and even if you don't use them they can deliver ammo to your dismount bren and mortar squads. Bet you could make a mean anti tank one too, with a bazooka team. I've probably already mentioned this but they were also listed by Ford flathead V8s. So hands down coolest military vehicle ever made
