Beautiful melodies are basically impossible to comprehend using a cochlear implant due to the compression of sound waves into about a dozen distinct frequencies. Cochlear implants are, however, capable of conveying simple rhythms. Thus, the argument that not performing cochlear implants on children "deprives them of music" is totally baseless until the technology progresses to the point where it replicates what the inner ear does with sensitivity to and neural conveyance of thousands of different frequencies.
