  1. "Going on safari" was "the" thing to do from around the late 1800s up through the 1950s at least. That's why there were all those Charles Addams cartoons with places with a wall covered with animal heads, and it was completely mainstream. You could go on vacation in Hawaii, or if you had a bit more money, go skiing in Switzerland, or for a holiday to really talk about, go on safari in Africa and ... kill animals.
