Some of Velikovsky's ideas were way out there, but he was probably one of the first people to talk about planets shifting orbits and colliding. Some current models of the early Solar system indicate that Jupiter moved inwards and then was pulled back to its current orbit by gravitational interactions with Saturn. We also have the "Big Splat" model for how the moon formed. So, in other words, Velikovsky was rather like the old saw about a stopped clock being right twice a day. He was right once in a while in very, very general terms, but the vast majority of his ideas were absolutely loony (I have read his book, "Worlds in Collision", by the way).

@ianw_xvi8784 Which is why I said "the vast majority of his ideas were absolutely loony". He was trying to fit square pegs into miniscule round holes using a really big sledgehammer. Or to put it another way, he tried to make his concepts explain everything using extremely tenuous thought processes (which I wouldn't deign to call logic). Interestingly, Einstein actually stood up for Velikovsky against his loudest critics, even though Einstein didn't agree with most of Velikovsky's ideas.
