Watching "The Enforcer" youtube channel episodes during the first week of the war indicated that Russia managed to get forces into Kyiv and Kharkhiv in the first couple of days of the war. There was combat near the Kyiv Zoo and other places in the city, plus the Russian forces using a fully stocked arsenal at School 134 in Kharkiv. I suspect they "snuck" special forces units into these cities beforehand to capture strategic points in these cities, kill or capture the government and military commanders, destabilize the country and destroy Ukraine's command and control. It's how they captured Kabul at the start of the Afghan War, and similar to how they captured parts of Georgia in 2008, and Crimea (and Donbass) in 2014.

@dutchrjen The only way this advance would have worked would have been if the Ukrainians had rolled over and played dead. Problem is that Putin didn't seem to realize two things: 1) Ukraine had been receiving NATO training and would fight in a completely different manner than his generals expected, and 2) the Ukrainians HATE the Russian's guts.

@waynesworldofsci-tech I don't know why you would be annoyed at the incompetence of a repressive imperialistic racist nationalistic regime. It's a good thing, because it prevents them from ever expanding. It might also lead to the overthrow of the regime. Sadly, the leaders aren't the ones on the front lines. It would save a lot of lives that are being unnecessarily wasted. I hate war as much as you do, and wish people would find better ways to resolve their differences. Sadly, it is also part of human nature, so all we can do is try to prevent it or, in the case of UN Peacekeepers, try to separate the two sides and prevent them from coming in contact with each other. And I do agree that more attention needs to be paid to those other areas. One reason that Ukraine is receiving so much coverage is because of the amount of internet connectivity in Ukraine, and the fact that Ukraine has made a major effort to welcome journalists and give them access to most regions of the country. In the countries that you listed, journalists are usually not welcomed or protected, hence less coverage. Not to mention they are 3rd World Countries in Asia or Africa (and so don't seem to rate the coverage because they aren't European).
