The question is, what can the UN do? They cannot act more forcefully because Russia will just veto the action on the Security Council. The UN doesn't have a standing army, and too many countries tacitly support Russia. The only thing the UN should do, if they can, is kick Russia off the Security Council. But then China would veto that idea.

I think it will be interesting to see how the Ukrainians treat this mercenary compared to the Russian's treatment of the foreign volunteers. If he is fighting with the expectation of being paid, he is a mercenary and not subject to the Geneva Convention and its protocols. The foreign volunteers, on the other hand (as far as we know), didn't come with the expectation of being paid, and so do not fall under the category of mercenary. That means that they should be treated as POWs under the Geneva Convention. It therefore appears that Russia is violating a treaty that it has signed, but what else is new?

If anything surprises me, it's that Russia doesn't think that this stuff is going to get out. Both the US and Ukrainian intelligence services are listening in on Russian communications, so all of this stuff is being transmitted to the Hague. At this rate, Putin and his cronies will never be able to leave Russia ever again, except for trips to China and Belarus. Anywhere else and he is likely to be arrested.

His comments explain a fair bit about why Kherson fell so quickly, and how much organizations like the GRU have been infiltrating Ukraine for years so they could take over the country. I always suspected these things, but it is nice to get confirmation and solid evidence. By the way, when was he caught or gave himself up?
