@andysmith1996 thank God. At least someone knows about AUSS!

The reality is a lot more complicated. And I'm only 4 minutes into the video. First of all, there is no such thing as non-catastrophic pressure hull failure in submersibles. The reason to use titanium, steel, etc is purely because of the predictable parameters of the resulting product due to homogeneity of material which can't be achieved with composites. You can't easily add 45 degree because this will increase weight-to-displacement ration which is already challenged by usage of titanium endcaps. Second, exactly the same production defects were discovered on the AUSS project hull with similar corrective actions applied. So... And I'm shocked that nobody is referring to the aforementioned project... As tons of research and testing (including fatigue testing) were done there. What I'm trying to say is that there were trade-offs made... But they were not just stupid. My position stays the same... There is nothing for human being to do on the deep ocean floor and space. These folks decided to entertain themselves... Now everyone is entertained.

@BongoBaggins you are not correct. Just search or ask GenAI about compressive strength of composite materials

Come on the OG project is carbon copy of the US Navy AUSS project from 80s. Were they stupid as well? No. Where there very specific reason to use carbon fiber? Yes. My point is that... Well the sole purpose of the project was to entertain "explorers". The project contributed nothing to the science/technology. There is nothing for human beings to do on the ocean floor.

@solareclipsetimer another interesting aspect is that on the recent flight I've enjoined James Cameron's Deep Sea Challenge 3D movie. Highly recommend! But you will be shocked to learn how not ready they were and how pressure the target expedition dates put on the team...
