Comments by "David Houseman" (@davidhouseman4328) on "British F-35Bs Fly From HMS Queen Elizabeth • WESTLANT 19 | Forces TV" video.
It stems from the engine exhausts but one is used for the ship, the other the aircraft, though if one is damaged the other can do both.

Perplexing Enigma wow that's a lot of text. Why are you wittering on about the US on a British video where I asked about the RAF?
5
@submarineradioman5535 ha, it's secretly camouflaged as two ships.
5
By the time the Soviets fought, the cream of the Luftwaffe had fallen to the RAF and friends and the Royal Navy had cut off the resources of the rest of the world.
4
It's not a stop gap, Tempest will fill a different role.
4
@koolyman more in the vein of the Typhoon, with a stronger air to air focus. Also obviously not STOVL, but not strengthen for catapults either.
4
Trials are normal, militaries are impressed by the F35, over budget is unfortunately how all these projects go, they aren't costed right to begin with.
4
Adversaries are fielding old jets or none at all on carriers. Day to day it will be more of an assault ship, it's good to see the flexibility, carriers are good for a major conflict but over kill for many missions.
4
@mnds1476 that's because with info the S400 could get on the F35, Russia could build a system to deal with the F35.
3
By your own statement 40% are working, how's that none?
3
Perplexing Enigma you actually believe the RAF has flown thousands of sorties in Syria and Iraq against sand?
3
El Draque do you think the Empire was optional?
3
El Draque lots of words, not a lot of truth.
3
@Bellthorian advanced doesn't mean does many things, it means doing what is does better.
3
@Deepanshu700 we can hope. But it does a lot of thing like a smaller carrier. Particular crew but it modular construction allows participation by smaller yards.
2
That's how they are used, but origin is from engine exhaust. They can go straight up with this setup.
2
Nope, you need specific strengthening to use arrestor cables. They have a rolling landing, using the lift fan to be able to come in slower and use conventional braking.
2
@alexanderrose1556 France is more than double the area of the UK. It's not that important for Navies but physically France is a great deal bigger.
2
As a Brit, when we fought those wars we were a tyranny. Controlling a quarter of the world against the will of it's native people.
2
@burtlangoustine1 the wording important because you suggest something much more than what it is. People say any when really they mean a dozen countries, or even just Russia and China. As for where we actually stand, we have nukes, and a credible second strike capability at that, so we certainly have some ability. We couldn't invade quite a few nations but they couldn't invade us, only the US is could. We have the ability to operate a force at distance that is easily in the top 10. But we are a nation of only 65m so we have limits.
2
Why in this day and age, nuclear isn't new?
2
@vertie2090 Hardware that can be afforded by Syria. Ie. Not the most capable or in quantity. A2AD is about the whole, not just individual systems but if those systems are improved the whole is much harder to crack.
1
@vertie2090 as a rule I don't believe a word that comes out of Russia's mouth, but air defence is a speciality of there's so I wouldn't be complacent.
1
@vertie2090 one of there own surveillance aircraft as well, Russia kit, used by Syria.
1
@bandhsilvers1 yeah, they took an unarmed ship, great show of military prowess.
1
@bandhsilvers1 you know the ship they actual took was Swedish, just flagged British? And how does that change them being unarmed anyway?
1
@bandhsilvers1 you said the oil was British, for that the relevant point is who owns the ship. This video is about a capability Iran can't even dream of, that doesn't look like weakness to me. And no I don't know that about my government.
1
Sea viper and ceptor from the Type 45 and 23 respectively. Themselves they just have the phalanx fail safe.
1
It would be good, wean you off Russian and into a partner for future projects.
1
Landing actually saves fuel, because a landing is certain they don't have to keep any spare for if they didn't catch the arrestor wire.
1
@zipz8423 why not, they are designed for a life that involves two generations of aircraft. How can you be confident of what's happens decades into the future?
1
@zipz8423 that wasn't what I was saying. We are of course using the F35B for the next couple of decades. But the ship is designed for 50 years so there will be a jet after the F35B.
1
@alexanderrose1556 Yeah, France is the country I usually compare to due similar economy and population. Just wanted to point out how big a difference in area there is.
1
Any 1st world country? Say Norway?
1
Because it isn't 100m. Nor is it only 10% of wjat it could be. Also CATOBAR puts a lot more stress on the aircraft giving shorter life spans.
1
@Kevin_Patrick001 there is still arrested recovery, as with Emals it's less stress than older systems but it's still a much faster accelerations/declaration than conventional or STOVL. On in air refueling, a V22 could easily do that job but at the moment we are busy by fighters. And the F35B still has good range, even if it's shorter than the C.
1
@Kevin_Patrick001 Super Hornets can tanker from each other, it may be a future F35 development.
1
BLACK BOTO the F35B isn't VTOL in a practical sense as it can't take off with enough fuel/munitions. The Ski jump increases the weight it can lift off with even further than a short run on a flat top.
1
@zipz8423 it doesn't have a larger wing area, that's the C.
1
@chrisklitou7573 why does that matter, modern fights are about about sensors and missiles?
1
@vmcauley and? The Vietnam war was almost half a century ago.
