We don't have to worry about Russia because of actions like this. We won't have to fight because we are prepared to.

I'd like to see a report of Russia taking mainland Europe in 5 days? That was the kind of thing talked about with the USSR + Warsaw Pact starting in East Germany. It's laughable from present day Russia on the other side of Poland. If Russia could run a decent democracy it could start integrating with the rest if Europe, til they we're not interested.

It's a NATO mission not an EU one.
7
I don't know why you think tanks define an army?
6
@extremistcontent1337 tanks doesn't at all, it actually points to the exact opposite. There isn't a potential fight anywhere near us. So the overall size of our forces doesn't matter, it's the size of we can deploy at distance that matters. And you can deploy twice as many Ajax or Boxers as Challengers with air power taking out any big threats. We aren't defending our islands with tanks, we're doing it with jets and subs.

@guillerbrady9261 no treaties, no historical ties, not exactly a pristine government. We were never sending in the troops. We could be supplying more military aid but we were struggling to supply our own forces.
5
@discoboy8169 Estonia has about twice the GDP per capita as Russia?
4
@sovietred7371 this is a video about the UK helping Estonia (it's friend down the street).
4
They won't attack, neither will Russia, so it seems doubtful.
4
@ARXDMOS it not 1994 but the majority of there kit is the same. T72s, SU27, MIG 29, Kilos, Akulas. All cold war designs. And that's what they have numbers of, all crewed by conscripts. Anything new or professional is only in small numbers.
3
Owen z. Politically. It shows Russia wouldn't be fighting Estonia, they'd be fighting NATO. So Russia won't invade.
2
@extremistcontent1337 Maybe WW1 with the US and China play the British and Germans but nukes have killed global conflict. In terms of others Russia's just massively cut back, in line with oil prices and the rest of Europe is slowly moving towards the 2% we've spent consistently.
1
Somarik Green a coup by putting half a million normal Ukrainians on the streets of Kiev?
1
@sovietred7371 Maskirovka
1
Dave Klonpenberg by voting?
1
Dave Klonpenberg it will not change anything because we are essentially getting the government we want. Or more accurately we are getting the average of the governments we want. You may have a majority not liking the government but ask what they want instead and you get people pulling in opposite directions.
1
@sovietred7371 militaries sure, however with Russia it's there government.
1
Dave Klonpenberg that's a good example to illustrate my point. Tommy Robinson is a very fringe figure. His ideas are never going to be enacted, not because of rotten government but because they don't have the support.
1
Dave Klonpenberg there were procedural issues with that case, but it happened at all because he was already serving a suspended sentence. And he is facing a retrial, he hasn't be exonerated. That is after a number of other criminal conviction. The best you can say is he's only bad, not awful, as an individual. I don't know much about his politics because he is an irrelevance that honestly I'm giving to much time to typing. He seems generally anti Muslim and has a far right background of the likes of the BNP. I think you are making my point. You think there is a problem because someone like him isn't mainstream. When someone like him isn't mainstream because he has no mainstream appeal.

@kevinhorgan2770 I don't remember any complaints about the British in the conventional war part (And in Iraq we deployed c.40k troops), it was only in the occupation, which we wouldn't be doing. It was armed forces before, not army. It always seem the best choice anyway as the marines will be at the front of anything. Our max deployment now is 40-50k (not sure how much is army) but we have c. 10k deployed at the moment so 12k is a laugh.
1
@guillerbrady9261 Firstly, NATO mission, therefore the US will be involved, honestly Trump is irrelevant, Congress would declare war. Even without the US, NATO is 28 other countries. With armed forces easily outnumbering Russia. We would be leading, not fighting alone. And what did you learn from Iraq and Afganistan? That we can't occupy a country? We wouldn't be trying to do that. Thats what the Russian would be doing, who also found they couldn't do that in Afganistan. And lastly our armed forces are 140k+.
1
Estonia's our lead (British). Kaliningrad would be swept up by the big guy in Poland (the US).
1
@williamtudway1481 I was tempted by the same (pretty poor) joke.
1
@ARXDMOS Challenger II, Eurofighter, Astute. Russia had a session upgrading but its for a smallish core. They have a force similar to the UK or France of a decent standard. And they have a large force of old kit and conscripts that would making invading them incredibly painful.
1
@ARXDMOS pretty much.
1
Pawns with democratic governments, nuclear weapons and security council seats. In what world does that make sense?
1
@alextorres6146 how you they do that when the other security council members have exactly the same powers. And vetos are regularly used?
1
@rhysnichols8608 the BBC is a good start but there not alone, and we have a free media. Channel4 news is my preferred choice for investigative journalism.
1
What treaty is that? Treaties are written down and easy to refer to. But it wasn't in a treaty, so you can't tell me.
1
Dave Klonpenberg Incompetence is very hard to have a political policy about. Everyone thinks it's bad. Institutional racism in the police was bad, so you try to correct it. Over race based sensitivity is bad too. Unfortunately police are human, and thus flawed. But I think you are also suggesting a general problem with Muslims. That will always remain fringe because the vast majority aren't a problem. Extremists and messed up people are a problem but that's also true of everyone.
