We helped create them, they are designed to be what we wanted, of course we're buying them.
5
Very few countries capable of affording them outside the EU.
5
I really like the idea of spiralling technology from the Typhoon to the Tempest. And not thinking of a jet as done, but just the latest iteration.
5
@Mmjk_12 outdated is different to less capable. The advanced nature of HMS QE is best illustrated by how few crew is needed for it to operate due to automation. If you want to compare a US carrier to a UK one you need to stack up 2 or 3 UK carriers for comparable purchase and operating costs. US may then still have some edges it looses a lot in flexibility.
4
Different planes for different jobs. Need speed and height to say intercept a Blackjack. You want the Typhoon. Attacking in uncontested space or stood off with a storm shadow, Typhoon is perfectly capable. Breaking enemy air defences you do want the Lightning. So we have both.
3
@Mmjk_12 well that was a massive tangent to the advanced technology of our carriers but I'll reply anyway. We couldn't invade a large country across the otherside of the world. We are not in the days of Empire. No country can invade us either though. So we can wage war, we are just limited in the scope. As befits 65m people. As for S400 you are basically swallow Russian propaganda. We don't know how effective it is, but we do know the F35 is designed for fighting such types of systems.
3
There's been thousands if sorties, there's a regular line of communication between the west and Russia about them. How deep is your head in the sand?
3
Because Russian equipment is worse. Them have some comparable kit but anything they have in numbers is Soviet stock.
2
@kizzyp2735 there are some, trainers confirmed, special forces not confirmed as usual.
2
BAE is the 30th largest company in Britain and the only giant defence in Britain. I don't see how it can corrupt the whole state?
2
Because of all those fights where it would have made the difference?
2
Astuteous Maximus I think his issue is with the F35 part, guessing he wants them called Lightnings?
2
@JuzzlinOSS what's near the border, the UK gets buzzed by Russian planes? If those on the border fall new countries are suddenly on the border. Fighter from countries further back also support allies closer, Russia outmatches those on its borders Jets also get scrambled to escort civilian planes, not wanting another 9/11.
2
20 years, 30 if you count other countries.
2
@lukearmitage1533 I don't know what point your trying to make. We are buying new jets as fast as we can afford. If we buy more Typhoons that would mean we'd buy less Lightnings.
2
@lukearmitage1533 we aren't in a significant conflict at the moment, so of course nothing can match a Typhoon. You don't build your air force for the best case, but for the worse case scenario. But you seem to be saying get Typhoons as well as F35s? That isn't an option, we don't have the budget. F35 deliveries are at the pace the MOD specifies, at the pace we can afford.
2
Whether the Lightning is much better may be debatable but that it's different isn't. Firstly the Typhoon can't operate from carriers. Secondly the Lightning is stealthier. This is allows it to operate in contested airspace the Typhoon can't. Typhoon + Lightning is definitely stronger than just Typhoon.
2
Sure, operation shader, against ISIS.
1
@hardwired548 I didn't go on and on about, you did. I was more concerned you thought a Typhoon could take off from a carrier. And I gave you links.
1
@fredsas12 you've kind of answered you own question. The UK is financial capable of thrust vectoring but is choosing not to make, so it doesn't want it. Though it seems like a nice idea the energy loss isn't worth it.
1
They're keen of the "T"'s. I could see Thunder replacing the Lightnings when the time comes.
1
What you've missed there is Putin is also happy to use force. See Ukraine, Georgia, Syria, Chechnya. So although you need to counter the miss information, you also need the conventional military
1
Yep, that's what you need to stop other tools of death.
1
Where do you come up with lazy?
1
Look it up where? Who'd know better than the RAF?
1
Its been used in action. More than just in service.
1
Nope, even if none US countries have better aircraft coming (which is debatable) they don't have them in numbers yet.
1
@ykdickybill Russia isn't communist, it's now an oligarchy. Doing business is one thing but we shouldn't be good mates.
1
@timetowaste Britain would lose capability. Production is part of defence, along with today's equipment.
1
@glennridsdale577 The Typhoon for the Indian competition included some upgrades. AESA radar was one but I think there were others.
1
In what sense, its served well and is continuing to do so.
1
@goodputin4324 it's job, policing our sky's. Also that of other NATO members and most recently flying hundreds of sorties in operation Shader.
1
@Mmjk_12 because there's so many T50 and J20s around?
1
@Mmjk_12 We do have F35s?
1
We're in Romania, he could mean the Balkans.
1
You think we shouldn't build new jets?
1
@mrscreamer379 Sweden has signed an agree with the UK over Tempest, affordability is part of design plan.
1
@fredsas12 F35B isn't short range, it is shorter than a C but it's still 75% of its range. F14 was dropped because it was pointless, the F18 could do it's job as well as it along with being multirole.
1
@JuzzlinOSS fighter aren't just to stop invasions. I don't want Russia bombing the UK. Obviously you don't need 5th gen to escort a commercial jet. Your point was we don't need fighter.
1
@JuzzlinOSS Russia don't go around bombing people like us, we have an air force. The story is different in Georgia, Syria or Chechnya. They wouldn't spontaneously bomb us, there'd have to be a trigger, and even then it's unlikely. But you prepare for the worst case. Not really sure why you added Germany, they are an ally?
1
@JuzzlinOSS they aren't going to attack for fun. They'd attack because we'd come into conflict over something. You think we are as likely to be attacked by an ally as by a country who that alliance is basically there the defend against and who has conflicting foreign policy? And again you just said fighters not any specifc generation. What fighters is a whole different question.
1
@JuzzlinOSS minimal, we have an air force. Because you can't stop one weapon doesn't mean you should stop caring about others.
1
Stop listening to videos about the RAF then.
1
@fredsas12 They are both multirole but they are still designed around a specialisation. Typhoon is a master interceptor and jack of other fields. F35 is a master strike aircraft and jack of other trades. Multirole means you have more aircraft doing to job you need at the time. They can pick the appropriate role.
1
They do have drones that they'll fire at and shoot down, like the Mirach target drone. But it sounds like that's rare and its a lot of simulations and testing part of the system.
1
How did you come to with that, all it mentioned was the radar?
1
@bluerainbow956 it was already good, now it's better. The bigger changes are the weapons it's added Meteor which cab hit other jets at longer range, Brimstone which can hit moving ground targets a go through armour, and Storm Shadow for fixed ground targets but from a long way away.
1
We have jets in Romania.
1
@paulreeves1787 who's that? If your talking about Philip May, then no he doesn't.
1
You can't not rely on computers as you would lose. You can make systems resistant to cyber style attacks, which we do and is becoming an increasing emphasis. Whether this change is fast enough or deep enough I don't think we (people not intimately involved) will ever know.
1
@gilbert7794 What EMP weapon?
1
How? Because we're doing a normal jet update?
1
@hardwired548 go away because you don't be an answer?
1
Why would we do that when we can pick them off with a Meteor from afar?
1
