A nice lower intensity mission to start things off.

They do, and there is no regret. It's all about information.
7
I'd guess it's because they need more practice of vertical landings. But also remember they look cooler on videos.

Tier 1 partner means we get to choose our delivery schedule. We are buying them at a rate our budget will allow. But 6 F35s is easily at an invisible class level. 12 will give us good CAPs. Really looking forward to 24 though.

The original design idea of the F16 has long been rejected for the F16 itself. The F16 isn't successful as a day fighter, but as a multirole aircraft.
4
A ship is always a she, makes sense to me another vessel is too.
3
Cause only the yids would fight ISIS???

@mbukukanyau oh so more than a decade later and for the majority of its jet fleet the US decided to.use a worse technology, but just for the fuselage...
2
The F22 was the most advanced jet in 2006 when exports were banned. As production was stopped years ago there is no point in rescinding that ban.
2
We have the option of more Typhoons. What Russians can't do is cutting edge.
2
@loosecannon8340 yep, or at least let you avoid it.
2
Imagine the US paying us billions for the 15% of every F35 they buy. Why is that being obedient.
2
@mississippirebel1409 The UK doesn't make jets alone because it didn't make sense to, not because it's incapable. The JSF program started out with the UK talking to the US about a Harrier replacement before anything was designed, it wasn't anything like the US offering the UK some building work.

We've spent years bombing the hell out if this group we support? My ignorance is apparently not listening to quack theories on the internet.
1
Not in operations since 2015. But regardless they aren't flying the f35B.
1
They are bought for both. The balance is slightly more RAF, even if both will fly from land or sea.
1
From what i heard the maintenance costs were starting to spike. Not through age, but flight hours.
1
Or not
1
What showed she had no idea?
1
@Blob B that how it's starts, and why they thought they could do 3 in 1. But say because the fuelisage is wider the wings are slightly different where they attach, the space taken by the lift fan means a smaller fuel tank and weapons bay, engine parts must be adjusted to attach the lift system. Then when testing the adjustments you need to make are slightly different.
1
@Locutus494 Parts are only about 30% the same between the two aircraft.
1
Different maintenance training, different spares, different upgrades. They are basically two different planes.
1
@kodiak64 it's the opposite. This is a defence Secretary that respects the traditions. She's a royal navy reservist, ships are female, so of course a ship of the sky is also female.
1
Just because they don't VTO, doesn't mean the can't STO from less than the full length if the carrier. Ie see them take of from an American class without out a ramp, or from near the end of QE.
1
@Albertkallal 80% does look a lot like f16 pilots chose the F35 but the F15 pilots didn't.
1
@Albertkallal I only read your break down which had 5 out 26 F15 pilots. But there's 5 missing to make 31.
1
Putin Did It F35/F22 can happily see SU57 BVR because it's stealth is crap.
1
@Myst3ryM4nn its not built for our carriers. When has range been an issue? It looks good on a stat sheet but in pratice? But yes the C has better range, the B has better launch rate and less wear on landing. B and C are a similar price. So you need an argument that means a dozen less Cs is better because you have to pay for cat and traps.
1
I love ugly war machines, you know they're built for a purpose.
1
@Myst3ryM4nn the C is the furthest behind and the most expensive if you include the launch gear, why would you buy it?
1
@challyho6375 Saidi Arabia?
1
@jamiewalker8131 our order rate is purely a financial question. Money for A's means less money for B's.
1
@mbukukanyau why does it assume they cannot restart production? They aren't going to rescind an export band on the off chance they will restart production sometime in the future and someone will want to buy it.
1
Why? It's already going to be years til we can fill our carriers and you want to slow that down even further buying a mix.
1
@mbukukanyau being a secret worth keeping means it's worse. When was the last time the F15 had a fight against a modern aircraft?
1
Look her up, she has a solid defence background. People didn't have an issue with the career politician, Gavin Williamson.
1
I'm not sure what more you would be expecting? Being a Royal Navy reservist shows she cares and she has some previous experience from being minister of state for the armed forces.
