In Brooklyn, the French sub captain that fired at the USN at Casablanca told the officers of his targeted ship (USS Brooklyn), that he would do it again.

@bigblue6917 that belongs on a shirt, a flag AND Monty Python

Totally agree with Adam B. There was a lot of blood and desperation since 39 and for many 37. IMHO, the generally told & known story of WW2 in the US is bracketed by Pearl Harbor and the atom bomb. More and more it's just the atom bomb.

And in Nov of 42, the French navy sortied to fight the USN at Casablanca. They fought gallantly with excellent ship handling, good fire discipline and effective damage control. The USN got off lucky. How do you explain that?

@AdamMGTF I have to thank the BBC's The World at War, which gave me just the right start.

Thank you Drach, I've been waiting for a detailed account of this event for a very long time.

@johnshepherd8687 explain why the French fought the allies with such resolve even at the end of 42? Pardon the spotty comments, Jeopardy was on 😁

@Litany_of_Fury friendly suggestion to search the web for the battleship Oklahoma. It capsized and sank at Pearl Harbor, although she never returned to service, the salvage was epic.

@joesvoboda3509 agreed, salvaging the Oklahoma was a was a waste of resources. IMO, esp.once the war & new ship construction progressed into mid 43. And IMO, the salvage continued for vindication from a bruising.

Well, some froggy flag stated that, when given such an ULTIMATUM, no fleet commander of any nation would response with anything but NO. Maybe that was said before the end of the war.

Yes, and with propaganda posters, but of course there were🙁

@armchairwarlord a Saratoga with an angled deck operating F-4 does make an awesome picture. By the end of the war, she was pretty worn out and unfortunately, a one off in class and (soon) for main machinery. The Essex's were plentiful, the Midways were arriving, sailors were returning home. There was no need keep Saratoga in service.

@Skyhawk1998 isn't it wonderful to have so much info available at your fingertips 🙂 ?

@stevetaylor8698 Thames! Thank you.

Interesting, HMS Hood killed the ships that may end up keeping her alive.

Ultimatum, demand & require (you to do xyz) are very strong words for a powder keg. The options were clear, the way it was said or translated was and is still rather cringy (IMO).
