@mattblom3990 this is just an opinion from a 40mm Bofors fan boy. In the magic sauce are the water cooled barrel jacket and the wonderful clip feeding system. You can just keep dropping 4 round clips into the feed guides and POOM away, continuous fire, no stoppages. Good range, good explosives, good velocity, good fire direction and good stabilization, it just adds up! Ok, enough gushing, over to the experts.

@craighagenbruch3800 the IJN cruisers kept their guns and their torps. For the as designed heavy cruisers, 8 and 10 X 8 inch guns (similar to USN) accompanied their torpedoes. The Mogami's initially had 15 X 6 inch guns (similar to Brooklyn) and the torpedoes. So IJN was not skimping on guns in order to keep their torps. They were over burdening their ships and skimping on armor.

@GaldirEonai CAP, escorting ships and ship's own guns form a layered defense system. Fighters form the outer layer and were not to intrude into the gunnery layer. Situation do occur when defending aircraft flew into their own flak zone and that will be on their own risk. This was the case for defending land targets as well.

The German Navy in WW2 was a submarine based navy. Yes, it killed a lot of merchant and a few warships. When the allies got their ASW game on, the U boats became the hunted and were slaughtered. The IJN on the other hand were stretched thin and never developed effective ASW tools thus the successful USN submarine campaign. When fighting a war, would you count on your enemy never developing the tool to make your single weapon system ineffective? Just think if in 1943, the IJN started cranking out ASW destroyers with a good sonar and a hedgehog. Plus plenty production of Emily's for maritime patrol. The silent service would have many more boats on eternal patrol.

@bkjeong4302 totally agree with you. Put the resources on carriers as the striking force, cruisers and destroyers for protection. Add a good fleet of Subs as longer range screen and long range anti shipping. And i do want to keep battleships for bombardment and sometimes that bombardment need to come with speed. Plus sometimes you need a counterforce against a surface threat while keeping other set pieces where you need them. Diversity and balance can be a good thing and provide the fighter with options as long as you can afford it (and USN in 43, 44, 45 could). No other navy could have done the same. For every other navy, the bb should be the first to trade away.
