@ColonelHoganStalag13 no and no. Indianapolis was sunk by unmanned torpedoes. I-58 had Kaitens embarked but the tactical situation was favorable for a conventional attack and six conventional torpedoes were fired. Hashimoto did testify and did so for the DEFENSE of McVey, that zig zagging was not an effective defensive tactic (something well known by USN sub commanders). Remember, one of the charges was for NOT zig zagging.

@tommasobalconi yes, kinda sorta 😁. Friendly note, after the first four Atlantas, follow on sub classes and evolutions deleted the 2 wing mounts for more 40mm. The Worchesters followed suit.

@tommasobalconi would that be the USS Worchester CL-144??

@57thorns the Tonan Maru No. 3 was a big 19,000 ton ship. Point of reference, a contemporary heavy cruiser was 10 to 12 K tons. She was converted from a whaler to a tanker. The best that the 12 torps that hit but did not explode were to make 21 inch holes to a ship that is designed to hold liquid. The Maru was also armed with 4 inch guns which made a surface attack unwise. After 5 hours, a destroyer escort arrived and Tinosa with her 1 remaining torp evaded the destroyer and left. Tonan Maru was towed back to Truk. Lawrence Daspit brought Tinosa back to Pearl.

@Statefir because when the channel started over 2 years ago, there were only 5 minute long guides to warships. Happily, the content had grown. There are several guides under 6 minutes, perhaps those will be more to your liking.

A few more nuggets 1) the USN torpedo design, development and testing was at the Newport torpedo station Rhode Island. (I wonder if the equitoral waters testing was performed at "the tongue of the ocean" in Bermuda. Edit - actually Bahamas. 2) the torpedo factory is in Alexandria Virginia, across the river from Washington Navy Yard & Naval Gun Factory (DC). 3) Part of the wonky design of the contact detonator was to incorporated an "anti-mining" feature. So that the explosive pressure wave of one torpedo in the salvo does not set off the rest prior to actual contact with the target. But every torpedoe designer would have worked out this feature... including the MK 10, another WT... moment.

Perhaps ironic, Christie commanded the sub squadron out of Brisbane which had mangy S Class boats with the older MK 10 torpedoes.

And imagine being the skipper of the US sub facing a court marshal for wasting his torpedoes on a target that must have had a secret Torp defense system. TRUTH. Btw: ther first salvo disabled the whaler's druce train, so yeah those sailors were feeling like mighty sitting ducks.

The OLD S Class boats with the MK 10 torpedoes carried their weight and some. The heavy cruiser Kako being one victim.
