Seem to remember that there were/was a cruiser bombardment of Henderson that was effective, but not so much that the airfield was neutralized completely. Sending the bigger guns with big order bombardment rounds made sense until even when 100% successful, there was still the CV based air threat.

Competition for topside real estate, sensor coverage, wave length allocation and prioritization is alive and well in the 21 century.

On the serious note, the night battles of the Solomon's campaign were full of ships of both sides and of all sizes being surprised at point blank.

Erik Heath as commented on already, and clearly discussed in previous episodes, there was a limit to carrier tonnage. Since a carrier is really a host platform for the air group (aka CVW), the IJN could have done right to develope a bigger pipeline to train aviators and have a robust reserve pool.

@hughfisher9820 HMS Glorious gets caught on an evacuation mission with a deck full of land based hurricanes and got gunned down. 23ish months later the Lexington sails into combat with her 8 x 8 inch heavy cruiser countering guns removed. Saratoga would do the same later that year. Those WW2 admirals made some strange decisions with their combat experience.

@ethanjacques-n9p-catch21luck7 Hi, pardon the last reply because it was wrong. I had followed US cruiser practice of placing an elevator and a hangar at and under the rear deck. This was the case with the Cleveland CA. After reviewing diagrams of the BBs that you asked about, the same space were used as crew quarters.
