Welcome to the channel! Lucky you, the mega DD episode 92 covers exactly what you seek (3:13 approx).

Agree, they are not much to look at from the surface. At best they look like a pair of break waters, a stationary floating pier or an aqua farm for kelp or bivalves, it's like a roofless car wash bay that you can park the ship within. The one at NOB is near the mouth of the Elizabeth River. If you know what to look for, it shows up on Google maps and looks (humorously) like the symbol for a capacitor.

@juanmc5731 was thinking about that book, I could not push thru it and it unfortunately ended up as backing material for my electric drill and then a bb stop. SRLY. The stupid things we do as teens....

@richardmeyeroff7397 the BAE UK QE CVF design had them. The winning design has "conventional" shafts.

@ryuukeisscifiproductions1818 why only displace your way thru when you can plane? Even today, the Freedom Class LCS will plane and did 50+ knots on trial. With scifi materials you can certainly plane bigger and faster. Develope the sci fi device that will make the water in front of your ship disappear, so you don't have to push it out of the way. Create a device that changes the physical properties of the water around your ship so that it is no longer limiting your motion.

@harryRiedl although initially necessitated by early jets, an angle deck will also be beneficial to piston powered WW2 CVW. The impact will be to operating safety and efficiency. 1) Every landing will be like you were the first aircraft to land with a clear deck. Therefore the difficulty level is more favorable and the boarding rate will increase, with fewer wave offs and bolters and fewer mishaps. Increase boarding rate will decrease time dedicated to landing and get your aircraft turned around for the next mission sooner. 2) with the added safety margin, the recovery speed and or recovery weight can also go up. This will permit more bring back for fuel and ordnance. Conserving your resources, while allowing you to load up at the beginning of the mission 3) The angle deck provides a second fly off area to launch new sorties 4) Because the ships were small compared with today, the limited amount of deck space and number of planes needed on the flight deck is going to make the ability to operate from both the bow and the waist like today, difficult, but it can be done. 5) every advantage helps. 6) if you have any questions or in need of clarifications, please do ask.

@richardmeyeroff7397 the propeller pods? They were nacelle like and hung from pylons approximately where normal propellers were, not very different from commercial applications. It was very early 2000's, sadly, BAE did not win the contract. One debate that often get brought up is the vulnerability of external pods to damage, vs the advantage of reduce machinery hull penetration and reduce area exposed to damage.
