Kurita had 2 ships sunk from under him during the battles of Leyte Gulf and many believe that this had an effect on his decision to withdraw from Samar

Never short change a squad of RN destroyers, or they will make sure you regret it. Haguro

@GaldirEonai 1) re: Submarine AA effectiveness, a friendly link for your reading pleasure. Also suggest further diving into the famous "stay on the surface and fight" order. U-boat Successes against aircraft - The History - uboat.net https://uboat.net/history/aircraft_losses.htm 3) Yorktown was definitely salvagable and repairable in her condition before she got torpedoed by the sub. I say that mainly because she did not burn and she was abandoned due to risk of capsizing from progressive listing. After the listing stabilised, the returning salvage party was actually making small corrections to the list. IMO, she'll go to Pearl for sea worthiness and propulsion repairs and then to Bremerton for a refit. Considering the desperate nature of the Solomons Campaign, she would have deployed into that meat grinder once she can sail and conduct flight ops.

Like the battle cruisers in the "1st Scouting Squadron"?

@bkjeong4302 🤓 everytime an IJN ship comes up, I instinctively brace for the barrage of 25mm Type 96 questions

@stevevalley7835 Yes, the Yorktown class were well design tough cookies but not without some flaws. IMO the tactical situation at Midway was not as dire in that USN was not about to lose the playing field as was after Santa Cruz. This would have given a much better opportunity to pull Yorktown into safer waters.

@stevevalley7835 agreed on your observation again. Please note that the context of the question from the poster was whether Yorktown was salvageable or worth salvaging IF she wasn't caught by I-168 😁

The IJN heavy cruisers at Savo were antiques, built before WNT limits. Ships such were the Aoba and Furitako and sisters were truly below 9K tons and armed with only 6 x 8 inch. Only the flagship Chokai was a WNT cheater ship. It came down to excellent training for IJN, a mess of blunders from USN, the tactical situation/ deployment / dispersion of force which allowed the IJN to go clobbering in detail, and a smidge of fortune.

@stevevalley7835 the Lex? I had the pleasure of having worked with a bunch of her crusty ABs. One claims that he once had an ensign Michelle Howard to train, in her pre VCNO days. Most of my brain cells are spent on the V's (esp V2 & V3) and AIMD.
