In the '30s a small one was fine, but in the '40s everyone wanted a big one. I read somewhere that the nmber of people in uniform was; Germany 19 million, British Empire 18.5 million and Soviet Union 55 million (USA unknown).

@tihomirrasperic Yeah, I figured the sick & wounded as a transitional group: they become dead, POW, demobed or returned to active duty.
