I remember listening to an R4 programme at the time of covid where a Sage scientist stated that it was made up numerous sub-groups. I also distinctly remember her saying that HMG consistently went for whichever sub-group modelled the worst case scenario. This effectively engendered an arms race amongst these sub-groups to consistently produce said worse case scenario. Seriously, you couldn't make this sh*t up.

It used to be lies, damned lies and statistics and now we can add models to that. What is it with people's fascination with and apparent near total belief in the value of models, graphs and statistics? Straight up predictions with boring old words usually make fools of us all, but wavy lines and numbers seem to make dish eyed gulls of us all.
