They're more democratic than every Arab state, yeah. Protecting their people and own system has to sometimes be done by proactive and infringing methods such as these. Solely acting reactive is what dooms a country. And let's not pretend that Arab states aren't using these methods all the time as well. But Al Jazeera's audience wouldn't concede to that. That said, I'm not a big supporter of UAE, Saudis or Israel. But that doesn't mean that you can't acknowledge that these spying methods may be needed in some situations.

What type of journalists were targeted? Those who've characterized threatening militants in a positive light? Those with a bad track record? Those with a biased view that may impact these countries involved? Those involved in activities labelled as subversive? All questions important to raise.

Many of the phones that has been intruded upon and people targeted may have had ties to shady organizations and had views that may destabilize the middle east and the world. In that regard, tracking some of these people were likely justified. But we know that Saudi Arabia, UAE and Israel can be very biased, so these methods are definitely suspect.
