  1. Religion. Radicalism. Poor education. A lack of control from the government. A lack of zero tolerance policies against these psychopaths. A societal structure that lets these entities thrive.

It was probably just a randomized senseless killing of villagers (by Boko Haram or extremists with similar beliefs), to spark anger and fear in the country, to recruit impressionable citizens by force, threats and extortion into these rebel groups. Or to spitefully avenge on innocents and the country for perceived injustices. These maniacs must be brought to justice and removed from this earth.
