Maduro wants a continued illegitimate presidency by cheating, locking up opponents, forbidding opposition parties, and suppressing his population. Why do you think millions of Venezuelans are in poverty and trying to flee the country? Why did Maduro win ~80% of the vote while having a <20% approval rate? Why were international watchdogs and observers limited from making sure that the election were authentic?

To push the regime into holding legitimate elections. The opposition knows that the current political system and elections are illegitimate and flawed. Participating in a flawed system as if it isn't flawed, could give the regime and the world the perception that the system is fine and that the cheating "win" by the regime was legitimate. That would not be preferred.
