If i am to guess his intention,then its likely that he says Europe is getting poorer because of increase in unemployment,decrease in research funding and demographic decline and other 'growth' measures rather than actual gdp per capita sliding. Your point about trade with the west leaving only a select elite being wealthy and the rest impoverished leading to the proliferation of leftist regime actually proves his point.People would rather have small to no amount of wealth entering the country as long as everyone has equal living standards than seeing wealth entering the country but benefiting only the select view. Now i too abhor inequality,but the point stands that most people would rather have everyone be poor farmer than seeing your neighbour be enormously wealthy due to oligarchic connection while you remain a poor plantation worker. And his points about drugs is not that the youth wont seek that,young people(all people,really) will always crave what pleasures them like drugs or sex,his point is that in the past young people wouldn't have openly confessed and glorified their vices.Nowadays people frankly confessed that they often spend time doing 'netflix and chill' (essentially being a couch potato) or having drugs to signal to other people that they are not more productive or aggressive than normal people and thus shield themselves from being a target of envy.I.E fake humbleness
