  1. Both stem from the desire to live forever. One is optimistic (when I die I will live forever in paradise) and the other is nihilistic (it's all over after I die, everything is meaningless, I need to prevent it for as long as possible). It's like the anarchist who realizes they need a "non-hierarchical leader." You've thrown out the baby with the bathwater and now you're taking a sponge to the pavement.
