Mahathir Mohammad was an influential but divisive leader to the development of Malaysia and therefore, should be assessed more critically but not outright antagonistic (more in 'critical support' sort of way). He might not be Soeharto, who came to power with cold hands soaked in bloods but nonetheless, he was an anti-communist and a proponent of ethno-centric "Bumiputera" and "Ketuanan Melayu" nationalist beliefs and policies during his tenure as 4th PM of Malaysia. There's numerous instance of dispute with Indonesia re: cultural claim and sovereignty, for example. He also praised Soeharto and have maintained close relation in his periods. He also promoted similarly discriminatory policies toward ethnic Chinese such as a form of cultural assimilation policy, historical revisionism where the historic role of Chinese traders and nobles during Malayan Sultanate and are being reduced and/or omitted etc. Also, I find his commentary re: capitalism is quite ironic considering he himself is instrumental in the process of economic liberalization in Malaysia. The New Economic Policy was the framework toward liberal economy system of Malaysia today, which rings Soeharto's Repelita (Five-years Plan) throughout New Order to me personally.

@paulmatters2641 The correlation between internal (class relation within a society) and external contradiction (class relation between countries or nations) is also inherent despite the distinction, and therefore cannot be separated from analysis much like symbiosis between living beings. Otherwise, you're only gonna make another 'right-wing' error to uncritically support the reactionary bourgeois class (something prevalent in the class analysis of online "PatSoc" circles) and then end up allowing them to rule instead of the DotP.

@paulmatters2641 I suggest you to show some modesty and do yourself favor learning about Malaysia politic and history first. Malaysia was anything but against Western imperialism in the past, and NEP wouldn't possibly come to fruition if it wasn't for US' soft power influence on Mahathir' political decision-making. Addendum: In case someone didn't realize, Malaysian NEP has nothing to do with Lenin's, even though both share some common ground with 'state-capitalism' things.

@paulmatters2641 "Malaysia's objective position.." Case closed, you sounds like a Western OP yourself lmao.

@paulmatters2641 'Fundamental categorical error' like what? Lmao, you literally fails to bring your point across with those obvious semantic errors right there. You can't just act like you didn't see that. "..which is not causative [...] The rest of your point is arse gravy." This is such a bad faith reading, either you intentionally misread that to mean something abstract (and therefore, I'm afraid you're exactly somebody I was concerned about in my point above). Or.. you just an average Western 'leftist', as your name suggests, who lacks sufficient first-hand knowledge on relevant context before you ever apply any theoretical basis on your analysis.

@paulmatters2641 Nah, it's you who should (probably) log off from Infrared cliques and the rest of reactionary "PatSoc" and start learning about Malaysia politic and history, as I said earlier on. Or else, you just keep doing this whole semantic nonsense and ends up making up false accusation about me on and on. If you don't feels like wanting to do it, then case closed and back off lol. It's simple.
