In the series you made it clear that the germans were very exploited/exhausted already at this point...if we can see that now, from stats and data..for sure the german commanders knew taht very well long before.. No wonder they would THROW in ANY spare men/women with rifles they could at any point of the sector where they believe a slight numeral advantage would pay out. Of course they throw in expendable (!!) hiwis. Any ambitious (!) nazi commander would throw in the cooks and radiomen to get that important building here or there for "everlasting glory". Really, no different from our managers today...
