@emberfist8347 .... While it was not a house I would have likely considered condemned, via the image we saw, the house they tore down was in a pretty higher developed area. I was in the construction business for 35 years and have been to a TON of homes that were worthy of demo and not look like it from outside. Once you go in, you see gross neglect of all surfaces, mold, rodents and such, that tell the story. These guys DID go into the home to confirm it was empty and disconnect electrical / gas appliances, prior to tearing down. My issue is that once inside, not one of them saw enough red flag to make a phone call. Tearing down a home is not the job of high school kids, this takes a certain level of engineering knowledge and approach, so as not to risk surrounding properties and such. Mistakes happen, but these workers were just not thinking here.

@gorkyd7912 ... I am not sure I would. As mentioned, I was in construction for 35 years, so I may have not had the authority to stop the process, but having been in plenty of structures that were condemned, I would recognize the difference between a home in disrepair and one that is a threat to an occupant.
.
We don't have the full story here. Clearly, those in the city offices are going to have to bare the responsibility for all this. I just wonder how much, if any, those who were on site asked themselves if this made sense. After all, this is not tearing down a fence over the property line or cutting down a tree that overhangs another's property, this is a home that represents $100K+ and FAR more in my particular part of the country (Marin Co., Comifornia)
.
This is just sad, because through no fault of their own, the legal owner has to deal with all this crap, because those in the city planning office all have their arms crossed pointing at the other guy for responsibility 😿

bastiat .. What in the hell are you talking about? Furniture may or may not be present, but in a condemned home, it is likely there are some disgusting ass couches with cushions that have been ravaged by rodents. It takes a LOT to condemn a home, because of the investment that somebody has in that property. I was involved with one or two properties that were condemned, because they are exceedingly rare, for reasons just mentioned. Those that were condemned, were obviously in gross disrepair and showed many, many signs of neglect to the point where it was clear that nobody was investing anything into the property.
.
Since the WRONG house was torn down and there are many people making decisions inbetween a recommendation a home be torn down and ACTUALLY tearing it down, there were a lot of heads up a lot of asses on this one. Willing to bet, if you searched YouTube for "condemned homes", you would see that those that have been, are not somewhere you would likely choose to raise your family. There will be notices of failed inspection reports on prominent walls and a paper trail from various inspections that lead to the demand that it be torn down for safety concerns.
.
Why don't you try to NOT be an ahole for a minute and recognize that maybe you don't have as much experience with these situations as others may. I happen to have a lot of experience with construction, so maybe my opinion has validity. Peace, bastiad 😉
