Because the "average Australian" long ago ceased to be the brave ANZAC on the beach at Gallipoli or the 'Man from Snowy River'. He/she is now a weak, rather narrow minded individual, afraid of their own shadow, and easily manipulated by the media and government.

@3rdEyeWide No, only a half-wit complies with a stupid law if it is WRONG! The only way wrong laws get corrected is for people to push-back, ignore it, and FORCE change.

The Federal Government first signalling they may overturn the court decision, then delaying any decision for days while they "consider it" is just one more example of total incompetence. Even a political half-wit would have immediately accepted the courts decision, and so closed the door on this matter as quickly as possible. But NOOOOO .... they have to drag it out to the maximum, keep the story as headlines all around the globe, so as to 'test the political waters' is all I can figure. So now whatever the final decision, they have MAXIMIZED both the political damage to themselves, and the reputation of Australia. Australia is clearly being run by a ship of total fools!

@3rdEyeWide It is a complete folly to base your beliefs on right v wrong (and so determine how you act) on the basis of what is legal v illegal. There isn't a person alive who doesn't disregard some law when complying with it would be stupid. Example, not stopping for a few minutes in a loading zone at 3am in the morning when there is ZERO traffic around. There are numerous things that are perfectly legal, which I think are morally reprehensible. P.S. And yes, I would disregard the stupid speed limit if there was little chance of incurring a fine. I do it all the time. I ride motorcycles and routinely cross double lines to overtake slow traffic in the mountains. I can be past them on a motorcycle in a fraction of a second, completely safely, and do so routinely.

No, finalizing the matter one way or the other in the court (or even immediately following the court handing down its decision) would have denied the opportunity for the Federal Government to maximize the political damage to itself and the country in the eyes of the world. It's important to drag the issue out, keep it in the headlines around the world, to generate as much damage to yourself and the country as possible. Don't you know anything about politics???
