So why wasn't the award of NSW Australian of the Year given to one of the volunteer fire fighters? Someone not paid a cent, who actually put the life on the line protecting the life and property of others. Was there was no individual in the thousands of volunteers whose actions stood just that little bit higher than others, or this person was symbolic of so many others? Instead its given to someone paid around $400,00 a year to do the job, and the biggest risk they faced during last years bush fire season would have been spilling their hot coffee sitting at their office desk.
