Having worked for a number of very large multinationals in areas that gave me a pretty good insight into their tax affairs, its actually inaccurate to say most multinationals don't pay tax. Most don't engage in sleezy schemes. What they do however, is if tax has to be paid they want it paid in their country of origin. A USA owned company wants its tax paid to the US Government to pay for the roads, schools, hospitals etc of the employees of the head office. They are not interested in the quality of roads, hospitals, etc in say Australia. Point being, as long as most of Australia's corporate world is a branch office of an overseas owned company, we will NEVER get the correct amount of company tax paid here. It is just so easy to legally transfer profit before tax form one country entity to another, and that will never change.

I was just staggered to hear Gladys Berejiklian say in a clip from this nights Four Corners? that when she decided to shut the economy down she gave no consideration to the economic consequences. It was just collateral damage. This is as close to the exact words used as I remember. NO CONSIDERATION to the implications of her decision, vulnerable young people being thrown on the unemployment for possibly years, business being sent into bankruptcy, massive social damage.... all just unimportant 'collateral damage'. Who could possibly think someone so either unaware or uncaring should be in charge of this current situation.
