Big Batteries are never intended to be significant backup sources of electricity. Their role in a volatile renewables grid is simply to absorb peaks and discharge them during short term troughs in supply. They are just glorified short term 'capacitors', not viable length supply options. There intention is simply to bring stability to the grid, nothing else. Politicians, the media, climate zealots etc who claim otherwise are either totally uninformed, or outright telling lies.

What Broken Hill demonstrated is the real design objective of these batteries in a renewables grid. They are not there as a viable lengthy supply alternative. There purpose is no more than to 'smooth out' short-term supply/demand imbalances in the renewables generation eg. a cloud comes across blocking out the sun.

What is the reason for cutting emissions by 80%? Seriously. Are you expecting this will change the temperature of the planet? Or prevent future bush-fires? Storms perhaps? Just what?
