So the "vast majority of people have close to nothing in their superannuation accounts", who clearly have pissed all their money away or were to lazy during their lifetime to earn decent money should have nothing when they stop working.

It's actually the aged pension system that wants a major shake up if they want to 'balance the budget'. Many 'part pensioners' live in substantial homes, own new cars, go on overseas holidays, and routinely eat out at decent restaurants. These partly tax payer funded people enjoy much the same lifestyle as fully self-funded people with considerable super balances. Most have deliberately arranged their financial affairs in order to qualify for the pension eg. giving large amounts of money to their children.

@samopalvampirenvonbutlegin8603 Under current superannuation rules, for practical purposes, it is impossible for ANYONE to now accumulate a sizable superannuation balance. Most public servants (including politicians) are no longer on a defined benefits scheme.

The debate was NEVER about $3 Million plus super balances. It was about a clearly signalled intention by Jim Chalmers to overhaul the entire retirement system. Translation: a major wealth redistribution and tax revenue generator for government. Where it has now settled is totally afterthought damage control when the whole thing blew up in Chalmers face. Jim just forgot left-wing journalists are well paid and the older ones who run the show have built up significant superannuation. Didn't have the media on side this time. You won't forget that lesson in a hurry Jim.

The good news is that the ill thought through and oppressive socialist objectives of Jim Chalmers have been thoroughly smashed by the pushback of 'people power'. For once the left-wing media told Jim to get back in his box, clearly as many journalist are highly paid and superannuation would be their main investment outside the family home. It'll be a truce for a while, till fighting resumes on such things as refunded franking credits. This bloke can't help himself.
