Not even these media commentators understand the role that large spinning generators play in maintaining grid stability, the critical role of VARs and frequency control. All things that wind and solar don't do particularly well.

As soon as someone utters the word 'net-zero' they should be dismissed as a clueless clown or dishonest opportunist. The day the first cave man discovers fire the human race ceased to be 'net zero'. It is an impossible goal, just pure BS political spin, no matter what is done. These are the indisputable technological and scientific facts. Global emissions are actually increasing, demonstration that no country on the planet is actually decreasing its carbon footprint. Any place that claims to has simply shifted its emissions from the production of what it consumes to China, India, etc.

@tassied12 As expected, you arrive with your usual BS. The bottom line for the SA battery is that it was a complete waste of money. It was never intended to stabilize the SA network, just put partially to that use in an attempt to justify this 'white elephant' when it proved next to useless for 'keeping the lights on'. To stabilize a renewables system many jurisdictions are converting existing generators into Rotating Grid Stabilizers (not blowing them up like the idiots in Australia), or building dedicated new Synchronous Condensers. All these things cost money, lots of money, to replace something that traditional spinning generators did for FREE. Don't expect any further response to your endless rather boring trolling.

@janemelrose7208 We need to do more that protect the environment for future generations. We need to leave economic prosperity so they and their children can enjoy a high quality of life. And as the current all renewable plan essentially means the complete de-industrialization of Australia, along with killing our major export earners of gas and coal exports, the economic prospects for future penetrations look VERY grim.

No, just people with an ounce of intelligence. Wind and solar MUST be firmed up with some technology. That MUST be either hydro, gas, coal, or nuclear (the idea that you can run an modern economy for possibly days on a battery is the stuff of idiots). So that is really what the debate is, what technology is necessary to firm up renewable. We are never going to build the dams, so that rules out hydro. The politics of the left rules out coal. So that just leaves gas and/or nuclear. These are the FACTS!
