"Most immigrants don't ask for welfare"!!!! You've clearly have never been to the Centerlink office in Hurstville. You really think not enough young Australians want to be doctors that we have to bring in overseas doctors?

@bobbyjones6668 If there's a shortage of doctors, just train more. There would be no shortage of smart enough Australian kids who would jump at the chance to become a doctor if they could land one of the highly restricted places in med school. They deliberately keep it restricted. My local doctor, who I've know for years, is the first to admit you don't need to be that smart to become a doctor, just a good memory. He believes you have to be way smarter to study engineering. And we have such a glut of engineering graduates many won't even get a job in that field.

@bobbyjones6668 The only case I can see for skilled immigration is for jobs that Australia doesn't have any expertise. If we decide to build a nuclear power plant for example, I'm sure there are probably specialist reactor engineering skills we may not have. But for welders, mechanics, accountants, IT staff, etc, etc, etc, no way. If industry isn't prepared to take on apprentices then they can just wear the cost of higher wages to attract qualified Australians. Supply and Demand. That's how it used to work. It was in the collective interest of industry to train Australians so there wouldn't be a skills shortage. Not necessary now, just import em. Pure lazy employment policy by government and employers, and not in the national interest.

@bobbyjones6668 The reality is the VAST majority of our immigration are people with low skills, or a qualifications so poorly considered they will never get a job in that field, so end up in a much lower skill job. It's just a complete fabrication pushed by the left wing MSM they are mostly highly skilled and in demand. The left wing media claims it supports the underdog Australian and them promotes bringing in as many people as possible to force basic wages down as low as possible, and make housing as expensive as possible. I'm mostly against immigration for environmental reasons, I'd like to see a MUCH smaller Australia, perhaps no more than 18 million. Which would be achieved over time with near zero immigration and encouraging people to have no more then 2 children. We've always been a farm and quarry, and nothing is every going to change that. 40 years of Governments trying after WWII hasn't lead to anything lasting. More people is just our riches which come from our natural resources spread more thinly.

@bobbyjones6668 One thing I haven't touched on that gets drawn into the wider discussion on immigration, is fruit picking. Anyone who has tried it will know exactly why Australian's typically don't want the job. It's gut busting work for very poor money. The TV presenters who says others should do it wouldn't last 20 minutes. You make more working in MCDonalds or stacking shelves at a supermarket. So I have no problem with our neighbors from the Pacific Islands coming in for a few months to do the job. It helps them get money to hopefully lift their kids up with education etc, and we get the job done. A win/win.
