Same people who are letting people returning from overseas through the airports (the largest source of current infections) back into the country without any checks or followup.

The Government's own website on the virus states the majority of cases are from people who brought it in from overseas, or from someone who caught it from that person. They didn't catch it from someone interstate. Beauty parlors etc. are not the reason for a SINGLE case. At present, the major reason for current reported cases is the failure of the Government to do its expected job properly.

@EastWood2004 That's more incorrect that correct. Young people can still contract the virus, but unless they have some other serious precondition expect the symptoms to be very mild. This pretty well holds up across all ages. It's just that as people get older the rate of preconditions which make them vulnerable increases. Most of these preconditions are avoidable life-style diseases for the majority of people e.g. diabetes, hypertension, heart/lung disease from smoking, obesity.

@Sanakudou There are now a lot of fairly accurate statistics on the virus. The death rate for people aged 30-39 years, for the whole world (which includes countries with substandard health systems like China, Iran, and Italy, is 0.2% In comparison the death rate for 80+ year olds is 14.8% There is currently no reported death for someone 9 and under anywhere in the world. Protecting the very elderly should be no more difficult than properly isolating them. As of yesterday the Government had yet to introduce mandatory regular testing of all aged care facility workers. I can assure you the waitress at my local cafe or my daughter who have just be made redundant were no threat to Granny.

An academic on TV this morning, Professor something (didn't catch his name) made the case there maybe a positive in keeping schools open to actually spread the virus around. As long as you are not overwhelming the health system, get the virus to spread as fast as possibly just below that point to build community immunity and get back to business ASAP.

am d Got to admit as a Sky News fan in general, I'm very disappointed in the attitude of Sky of supporting without question the Governments ill thought out actions, not taking them to task for their way more important critical failures, even deliberately spreading misinformation as the woman was late last evening (implying young people will also suffer badly from the virus, when for the VAST majority they will not). So easy for these people with 100% guaranteed high paying jobs to say just shut the place down. Jordan Peterson once stated his contempt for both the extreme left and right. Same people, just flogging different false narratives to try and control people. Like most things he says, I agree.

@harvesteroftone5473 Just the fact you say 'no mere flu' tells me its you who may not understand. Influenza is a potentially highly deadly disease to the elderly and vulnerable. On average 3500 Australia's die from it each and every year, 80% of them over 65 years old.

Not one single person, under the age on 9, anywhere in the whole world, has been reported as admitted to hospital for Covit 19, let alone died . Influence can have devastation effects on young children, including death. Up to the age of 60 (assuming no other underlying major health problems e.g. obesity, diabetes, etc the likelihood of complications is very low.

Probably less impact from a long-term health perspective as well. Should have just focused on isolating the vulnerable, and let it run its course, which it will anyway. It can't simply be put back in the bottle now, and the overwhelming majority of us will catch it at some time. Don't hold you breath waiting for a vaccine. They have been seriously trying for a VERY long time to find one for the closely related common cold.

There was an excellent short interview on the ABC (don't often say that) with a medical professor yesterday morning. He made the point that you may actually WANT school kids to spread the virus. Bit long to explain the concept in this format, but basically you want the virus to move through the population at a certain rate. If you are below that rate, you make decisions like to allow the kids to go to school to speed up the rate so you get to the other side faster. If you are above the desired spread rate, you make them stay home to slow it down. His main point was that he has seen no communication of the strategy, or even if there is one. Seriously questioning if people are just making seat of the pants major decisions on the fly.

@dw4956 What makes you think the virus has only been prevalent in the Australian community for 2 weeks? I reckon there's a possibility it arrived here shortly after the first cases started to show up in Wuhan. About as long as it took for the first infected person with mild to no symptoms to jump on an international flight to Australia. We've done no widespread testing of the population. As they foolishly just tested people who had been overseas, what did they expect the results to show? Correct, most discovered cases came from overseas, reinforcing their stance to only test overseas arrivals. A flawed loop. It's only since locals started DEMANDING to be tested, you have to be incredible determined and good mates with your GP to actually get a referral for a test, that results are now showing rates of local infection. No one knows how long this has been here. The daily increasing rate is a function of increased testing. How much is actually newly acquired v additional testing? Someone might know, but they aren't sharing that publicly.

What, the virus changed it's method of transmission 2 weeks ago and prior to that could only be contacted by direct person to person or surface contact???? First I've heard of that one. I'm still perplex why the media and politicians freak out on in relation to what the total or daily reported case numbers are doing. Even worse, use this as the basis for even tougher shutdowns. A. The shutdown hasn't been in place long enough to even effect the numbers. B. Haven't they heard of random variation for the daily numbers C. As the number of reported cases is likely tied to the current testing strategy, which is for people who have been overseas, the results represent more what is happening overseas more than locally. The WHO estimate of the R naught for the virus to be in the range 1.4 to 2.5 , but other estimates vary widely. For comparison sake the seasonal flu is 0.9 to 2.1 Given there is no immunity to this new virus expect reported case numbers to continue to increase till we get to a total of something like 5-7 million (70% of Australian population, less than half going to the doctor). Get used to it, most of us are going to get it sooner or later, no matter what these idiots in charge do.

Domestic violence will dramatically increase, alcohol and substance abuse will increase, mental health will take a dive, suicide rates will increase, some people will NEVER financially recover, families will break up. It took 9 years in the US for employment levels to return to levels prior to the GFC. What you are really saying is your're alright, safe job, so others taking a smashing are just the price of looking after you.

But people pushing the narrative that in a few weeks, months, whatever, life will just somehow return to normal, even better than before, are either naive or deliberately lying. Some people won't even make it to the end, and I'm not talking about because of virus infection. Some will slip into substance abuse, depression, and ultimately take their own lives. This is simply what happens in years of high long-term unemployment, fact. And will the ultimate sacrifice this person who worked in a beauty parlor that had the highest hygiene standards, spread not a single virus and was never going to, but now it and large sections of the whole industry no longer exists as the owners has gone bankrupt and lost their homes and marriages be worth it? To 'protect' the 'vulnerable' meaning mostly people suffering the consequence of their own poor life style choices (not all I full admit)? I for one don't think so. That doesn't mean other more targeted way more effective, but way less damaging on the innocent, strategies should be ignored.

@Brett.Crealy-kh1sk That theoretical beautician may infect 40 clients. The reality is she is more likely to be infected from her clients who's kids have brought it home from school. That one kid at school infected 1000 other students, whose families went on to infect 5000 other people in the train going to work, the beautician who lost her job is just one tiny causality. Current strategies are illogical and will not be effective at stopping whatever the the end will be. They are just creating hardship as a distraction for the governments (past and present, state and federal, of both persuasions) failures.

You won't have ANY economy if you start doing that, and there are masses of truly non essential services being left open. Schools are NOT an essential service. Explain to me how 24 fit young men playing first grade rugby league in an empty stadium and can be tested daily adds materially to the community health risk? Seems to me just some woke feminist who hates football culture, and probably all men, had an opportunity to pay out on it as they've wanted to do for years. FACT: Just about everyone is going to get the virus. The faster we do that without overwhelming the ICU component of the hospital system the safer EVERYONE will be. I was tested on Monday, I hope it comes back positive. Just got to lay low for a few more weeks and then not a further concern. Well other than assisting my daughter find another job, or financially supporting her for the next couple years. Not every young person is in this position.

COVID 19 So are you expecting 8.6% of all our health care workers (twice the rate of China) to catch the virus like in Italy's 'world class health system' (ABC claiming that this evening). I didn't realize Australia had the equivalent of the Chinese owned "Made in Italy" clothing industry located bang smack in the middle of the Italian 'hot spot', staffed with thousands of Chinese workers who went back home for Chinese New Year to the second highest virus area outside of Wuhan. I'm surprised we even still have a clothing industry???

I'd like someone to convince me the illogical and seemingly incoherent 'strategy' is actually going to make a difference to the final outcome. I can't see how. Read up on why SARS, and Ebola were able to be effectively stopped. This virus is MASSIVELY different in critical aspects related to spread, so why does anyone think it can be controlled using methods that proved effective in a totally different situation? If you don't understand the difference, just one key one, the fact that SARS and Ebola are massively more deadly was actually one of its own inherent weaknesses. It quickly disabled and likely killed the infected person.

Get hammered with what? A mild sort throat. If the vulnerable (same people highly vulnerable to the annual flu) are left exposed, that will be a major failing of Government. But you're probably right, they will get hammered because the government has already demonstrated how incompetent they are at the bits for which they were responsible. The government is yet to introduce something as fundamental as mandatory and routine of all aged care facility workers.

@harvesteroftone5473 The world mortality rate means NOTHING. It's about as insightful as the average temperature of the Globe. Australia does not have the age demographic and third world health systems of Italy, Iran, or China. Why are you so optimistic only 30% of the population is going to catch it? Its going to more like 70-80%. Get used to the idea you will likely catch it, I have. But as you like global averages, the death rate for 50 year olds and younger is 0.2%, and that's for those who tested positive. It will be much lower because many who have caught the virus and had few symptoms won't have. been tested. It will again be lower in Australia with a world class health system (lets say 0.1%). Naturally 0.1% is again an average. For half the under 50's it will be higher that this average, for the other half lower. In basic terms, if you've looked after yourself staying fit and healthy you'll be just fine. If you chain smoke and live on a diet of McDonalds and Coke, and as a result have chronic life-style related diseases that's your stupid choice and I personally don't give a shit what happens to you. You've been told for years what could happen and took no notice. Why should you selfishly think others should now come to your rescue. It's just your karma. For those who have preconditions that are no fault of there own, we will isolate you if you are unable to do so effectively yourself.

@johnmatrix7003 My thought are with you John at this difficult time. Wasn't so long ago my Mother was in an aged care facility, so I fully appreciate your situation. I trust you are agreeing we can't just have people wandering into the age care facilities with unknown status regarding the virus. Anyone, no matter how well their intentions, could be carrying it completely unknown to them. That is largely what happened in Italy, the age care facility being individual extended family homes. I was staggered just the other day when the Chief Medical Officer said they were thinking of extending testing ..... to people who worked in age care facilities. WTF!! was my reaction. These are the control measures that should have been put in place day one, not closing down the local coffee shop and throwing the poor staff out onto the street for no effect whatsoever.

@harvesteroftone5473 Now you just moved to what is know as a 'straw man' argument. Completely change what someone said to something you can argue against. Accept some facts of life. There will be be no vaccine, well certainly not in time to make a difference. This highly contagious virus WILL move through the vast majority of the population. Keeping the schools open will ensure it does (this may be a good thing, but that a different lengthy topic). No one should rely on the government or other members of society to take care of your welfare. The government by its very nature is totally incompetent to deal with uncertainty and no repetitive tasks. Don't rely on mainstream or social media to accurately inform you of the risks. Do you own research, and if you feel there is a genuine risk to your personal safety (primarily because of your age and/or heath situation) take full responsibility for that situation and do what is necessary to mitigate that risk. Don't kid yourself that throwing 2+ million people on the scrap heap will make one ounce of difference to your outcome.

The death rate for all REPORTED CASES is 10-40 year olds is 0.2%. If you don't understand how reported cases significantly overstates the true story, especially in the less affected age groups, sorry can't help you.

So many mistakes and conflicting strategies e.g. school open to speed the spread, business smashed to slow it . I reckon academics trying to do an analysis at some future time won't be able to make any sense of it. So we'll probably learn little, go back to sleep, and just like Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty Gtera Thurnberg will arise from her slumber to again get fear and paranoia put back on its 'correct' course after this inconvenient distraction.

Don't worry, the Government will look after you as long as you do what you are told. Just follow instruction, last thing we need at this time is people questioning decisions. Just accept we are doing this in your best interest. You won't have to stand in that unemployment queue for too long (well only a few years if things go well).
