People in 1923 got paid a "fair wage"??? That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. People were working a 6 day week for next to slave labor rates.

@chadjcrase I spent many hours talking to my farther when he was alive about life before, during the Great Depression, WWII etc. It's true they raised a family, but they were dirt poor. I can still remember my grandmother's house. Bleak and barren, a wood stove, outhouse toilet complete with newspaper to wipe your arse and sawdust. They had a vege garden, chickens, etc ..... and this was the 'good times' before the Great Depression. My father explained they had to take to the road looking for non existent work in order to be eligible for food stamps. What people called 'hobos' were really just unemployed men forced onto the road. His family fractured under this pressure. As he admitted, he like many others didn't hesitate to signup when WWII broke out. Not though any sense of national pride, but because it was a paid job.

The level of poverty in Australia in 1923 was VASTLY greater than it is today. In those day poverty meant being unable to put any food on the table, not unable to pay your Netflix subscription or mobile phone bill like today.

Any year you care to mention had a better work ethic than people today, well certainly most young people. On work days the cafes around Cronulla are chock full of young people most of the day. Way to young to be retired, and the cafes are way to expensive for the people to be the unemployed on the dole. They are obviously 'working from home'.

@chadjcrase Trust me, life was VERY tough for the 'average' Australian back in the 1920's. No unemployment benefits if you did loose your job, no divorce so people were stuck, if the bread winner did walk out the woman and children could nearly starve totally dependent of charity. A person on social security today has a better quality of life than the average Australian working 6 days a week in the 1920's.
