Usually these things tend to happen from someone or a group of people that are on the inner circle of the one they are toppling and when you take out legal means of removing a dictator, it usually means they use more violence means to remove that person.
I suspect Putin is likely fearful of everyone in is inner circle now because that's what paranoia does to these kinds of people.
The truth is, we don't know if there if a takeover will happen because the ones doing the take-over are not going to broadcast it until it's too late but I suspect pressure is probably building because many high up will want to save their own necks by distancing themselves from Putin.
Either way, from the west is point of view, I have to wonder why they would reduce the sanctions on Russia even if Russia pulls out of Ukraine, the truth is, Putin has shown to be a threat and unless that threat is removed, I wonder why the west would even remove the sanctions until he's gone or worse yet, a major reform of the political system to reduce the chance of this happening again.
Either way, Russia is screwed here because even if Putin pulls out of Ukraine, EU countries are still going to look for energy sources from other countries, foreign investment in Russia isn't likely to recover for at least a decade, this is long term damage that's being done to Russia that much of it will continue to be done even after the war.
