The problem is for Putin now is that he's backed himself into a corner that he's unlikely to win, on the one hand, Putin likes to be seen as the hard man to Russians which means backing down could make him look weak in Russia, on the other hand, if Russia does invade, the west has to respond and a lot tougher than it has done, because if it doesn't, Russia is going to feel bolder with other eastern European countries that look weak, after all, Russia will see it as the west will do little to nothing so why not.
Basically, the west has to put it's foot down so that Russia thinks twice otherwise it could just happen again and again, so yeah, I don't see how Putin can win this one and ironically, by scaring the eastern European countries half to death, he's actually helping to push those countries closer to the EU and NATO, the last thing Putin wants, if Putin wants those countries closer to Russia, he's going to have to try much better with diplomacy and not scare tactics because it's working in the favour of the EU and NATO.
