@zafir7007 u just need to look at japan to see there is a way to build to withstand 7.8, or at least better than what the images shown. Also, it is know (not just turkiye, it's more comon unfortunately) that countries who experience building boom and are also in prone to quake areas have cut short (to lower costs etc) and not observed fully the engenereing requirements. My country has the exact same problem, if there is a quake, there will be a mitigatable disaster due to pure incompetence greed, populism and corruption.

@zafir7007 well the reason is exactly the same as my country, cheap but deadly as seen in image and numbers. Populism is exactly as u described - caving in to the demand. It's a form of corruption. With the increse of world population plus climate change, we will be seeing more and more the effects of populism. See it this prespective: 100 years ago there wasn't the same political atmosphere we see today and less pressure and the building were stronger withstanding time. We all know that familly house who is older than 100 years ago, but we sure fast sell inheritance of grandpa flat. That's why I bought a house built in the 80's. The building itself is very sturdy and eficient because it was built with strict codes to withstand time and has quality. It's not a turkiye problem but a modern time problem all over the world.

Because corruption. Turkiye does have them in the building code but it just hasn't impose them cause 1 to many cases of cutting corners 2 not enough inspection and 3 the good old pay the inspector to look the other way.

@zafir7007 Portugal. We had this huge quake in the past. The prime minister at the time rebuilt it anti-seismic. Since the late xx century till today a lot of building isn't up to code. Same problem as turkiye as I see it. A lot of pressure to build fast and in quantity to provide homes to families. Quantity is enemy of quality and this is why, to mitigate disaster response. Our civil protection agencies are as badly funded as turkish. I see a lot of similarities in both countries. The first time I saw this was when I watched a documentary about the readiness of turkiye on the event of a majour quake in instambul, that's when I saw the same problems in lisbon, portugal capital. Its infuriating, a lot of this death could have been prevented.
