But in the process you seem to forget that liberalism and conservatism is fundamentally different. You have been saying that "old school liberals" and "old school conservatives" should realize that they are not opposed. Well... they are Dave. And I would say it's a misunderstanding of classical liberalism if you don't see the differences to conservatism. - at least some forms of conservatism. Especially the authoritarian and regressive kinds.

PanasonicTooth We are... on a daily basis.

So - if one judges Trump on the content of his character and concludes he's an authoritarian petty sociopath with the potential to become a fascistic dictator ?? (... not "fascism" as a SJW slur - but in it's actual meaning. - look up "fascism" and prove me wrong) There actually exists situations where comparing authoritarian rulers is relevant Dave.

Bex Fire ... as I mentioned... the vocabulary has been ruined in the US because of the two-party system. Everything loses meaning when authoritarians on the left call them selves "liberal". ... just as it does when fact-free right wingers claim that they are using "reason" and "science". Kellyanne is not the only one using "alternative facts" :)

elllad The left/right dichotomy is useless for a lot of things - including discussion whether people are "left" or not.

jas wats First of all you can look at his cabinet nominations - corporatism, corruption and scandals at nearly every position. Not to speak of his own conflicts of interest. Then there's let threats to the press. Just notice how Kellyanne Conway starts be threatening NBC if they say the claims about the inauguration crowds were falsehoods. ... and speaking of "alternative facts" ... he has ordered censor-ship of scientific facts wrt. climate science all over the government. Look at the way he handles the military... even if you can dismiss that he actually called for military parades to show of the power as something he didn't actually mean, he is right now actively speaking about using the US military to "take the oil" where the US intervenes. ... and now he has re-instated the CIA black-site prisons.

PanasonicTooth ... maybe I should add that I don't regard my self as a "liberal" in the US sense, but in the European sense. However, - of course - If I were living in the US I probably would be a "liberal voter" - simply because I detest the religious nonsense and science denial and the "alternative facts" and hypocrisy of the republican party. PS: I do think gary Johnsons seems like a decent guy ... wouldn't vote for him though, I think.

PanasonicTooth "The fact people" ? ... yeah... I know... that's the ones who cannot even fold a tinfoil hat.

***** yes... and I guess the US two-party system has really hurt the vocabulary. In Europe where we have several parties (in most countries) there are clear differences between "liberals", "conservatives", "socialists" - and even nuances like "social-liberals" and "social democrats". As a classical liberal/geo-libertarian our "main" political foe in Denmark is actually the conservative party.

jas wats "Sorry, but today's leftists are the modern embodiment of Nazism." .... but of course... if anyone accused you for then taking the next step and use violence, then you would complain about being misunderstood, - right? So... my point was just there actually exist such a thing as fascism. The merger of government, corporatism, and a militarized society with an authoritarian leader and limited free speech. Look at the stuff Trump has already done and tell me it's not worth considering whether this will evolve to actual fascism.
1
jas wats ... have you ever seen how a real democracy with a voting system 100% free of voter AND election fraud works? Come to Denmark, and I'll show you. No voter-ID needed.
1
MuahMan Oh no! ... You are completely without history.
1
MuahMan Well... then enlighten me. Do we agree that a thinker like Edmund Burke is one of the foundations for conservatism. What did he think of the emerging liberal thoughts at the time of the french and american revolution?
1
jas wats ... prejudice is easier than facts, eh?
1
jas wats So - apart from you not liking that I say it's relevant to compare Trump to fascismĀ - what makes you classify me as "leftist"?
