The Plymouth colony tried this to start. They nearly starved to death. In the end they had to reintroduce property rights and they prospered so well they had enough to spare that they celebrated with the first Thanksgiving, and shared their abundance with the Iriquois.

@Osmone_Everony The greatest threat to survival on Earth is (some) people. The secret to a successful colony will be what people you bring and the social and philosophical foundation of the colonial society.

Mike "there is no way to fix that." There are obviously ways to live with it. Mars has abundant resources, the rest we build.

@kbend You might get taxed for manned Mars exploration, but space colonies will be private undertakings with private money. What other people do with their money is none of your business. Putting off economic development until the world is perfect amounts to a permanent moratorium on economic development. That may be OK with you, but nobody asked you. What do you think men of goodwill have been trying to do for all of recorded history? We didn't stop expansion and economic development, and if we had we would be in a lot worse shape than we are; which is, on the whole the best we've ever been materially with more people lifted out of poverty than ever before. If we don't use the window of opportunity to access extraterrestrial resources, eventually it will all come crashing down, never to return. Starvation, ignorance, grinding poverty, your Luddite boot on the hopes of man till kingdom come.

Numerous costly and deadly experiments prove otherwise.
