I'm not a mathematician, but it did occur to me as I listened to her presentation that mathematics should be exempt from the practicality standard if only for practical reasons, for example the experience that new scientific or engineering concepts often find an application for a hitherto purely academic branch of math (for example, electromagnetism's use of imaginary numbers which had for years had no known application). By the way, as a conservative I assure you that obscure mathematics is safe from Fox news, or any other mainstream news outlet. You can't lampoon something if you can't describe it. I am somewhat confused by your reaction to the Fox News clip. It seems to offend you. Do you defend the research highlighted in the clip or not? Or are you offended by anybody outside the academic elites keeping an eye on the taxpayer's money? I'm afraid that's not defensible in the long run. Everybody on the public dime needs outside oversight. There is nothing in a body of knowledge that would keep the knower from doing evil.
