  1. There is pressure on the front of the combustion chamber, the back of the combustion chamber is a hole. The front of the combustion chamber is pushed forward. The back of the combustion chamber is not pushed. Rocket goes forward fast. There are thousands of pounds of pressure in the combustion chamber. 15 psi or less makes no difference at all. Dude the rockets weigh thousands of pounds. Far more than could be supported by the ambient pressure of the displaced air. When the rocket is going one direction at several times the speed of sound, what sort of magic do you suppose conveys the force of the air resisting the flow of the exhaust to the rocket to accelerate it? That is impossible. Air resistance has nothing to do with the operation of a rocket, whether it is in air or in a vacuum.

  2. Rebel you are lying. What I said was not at all confusing, and demonstrates that rocket thrust can't have anything to do with the presence or absence of air around the rocket. You either didn't read it or you believe me and won't admit it. There is no third possibility.

"To push against" don't cut it, you must show how the rocket hurtling in one direction at faster than the speed of sound is accelerated by it's exhaust running into air molecules behind it. How does the air resisting the exhaust push the rocket? It can't. No more than a water hose pushes back harder when you spray it against a wall a foot away than it does when you spray it up in the air.

  5. +the eye There is only one thing to react to the exhaust, the rocket. Newtons 3rd is not a local law, it is a universal law. You can't have the exhaust rushing out the nozzle WITHOUT having the rocket accelerating the other way. The object the combustion gasses are interacting with to create the backward motion MUST BE the object that reacts to that motion IMMEDIATELY. Newtons law does not wait to see if there is air outside the nozzle. There is only that to react to there is NOTHING ELSE. There is nothing else to react to in an atmosphere either. The rocket exhaust displaces air as the rocket ascends, but by the time that happens the rocket is gone, that does not affect the rocket. The combustion pushes against the rocket and as a result the exhaust goes backward and the rocket forward, action and reaction, on earth as it is in heaven. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction at once, no action (force or motion) can start without generating an instant reaction.

  6. I have yet to hear one of you explain how air is supposed to accelerate the rocket. I have an explanation of how it moves, you don't. You can't pick apart my analysis, and you DON'T HAVE your own. Calling it names does not alter the fact that you're busted.

  11. +Matt Harding Relativity has nothing to do with it. It is Newton, not Einstein, that they take issue with. Nor does religion, at least Christianity, have anything to do with it. If it did, the meme would have arisen in the second to twentieth centuries, when Christianity was more ubiquitous. What has changed is that the NEA has taken charge of American education, top to bottom, and replaced a lot of the curriculum with political indoctrination. Not only is science being taught more poorly, but it is taught along with a great deal of material that obviously is either opinion, or even blatantly false. Like the boy who cried "wolf", they find that when they lie so much, the students cease to believe them when they are telling the truth. Also, it might be bankrolled by the Saudi interests which are funding Wahabist extremists in the US. "Aha", you say, "religion after all." No. Politics still. Wahabism is religion to the dupes, politics to the sheiks.
