@frankydman "Luck played a massive role at Midway though, you literally cannot deny that. Had the Japanese found the Americans first, well..." Actually, that was almost baked into the plan. They knew that they would eventually be facing the reconnaissance assets of the island PLUS the American fleet. Even if the Yorktown was out of it like they thought, and despite the overall Japanese numerical superiority in assets, the US was going to have more recon assets LOCALLY than the Japanese. The key to Japan winning the recon battle in the Japanese planning was SURPRISE. They would supposedly know when to deploy their recon assets, and the US would not. The bad luck for the Japanese occurred earlier when US military intel broke the Japanese naval code. After that, and given the order of battle, it would have been a stunning stroke of luck if the Japanese had found the US fleet first.

@jannegrey "There were many reasons for quick Polish defeat (I always remind people that France didn't take much more time to fall)." The French had more warning, a significant amount of help, and weren't simultaneously attacked by the Soviets.

Yeah, there was some allied buy-in to the late German ruse of a "National Redoubt".

@michaelcalland801 "You would need a transport truck to bring along the food & water" In Eastern Europe you can generally forage water for horses in the field, not so much in the desert.

@michaelcalland801 I was responding to the notion of carrying WATER for horses in Europe. Horses can't make good time while eating grass, like mules can.

@jannegrey I was trying to agree with you. I'm not sure how I gave offense.
