@hnys7976 The reason the US middle class was so strong in the '50s was because the rest of the developed world had just had much of it's infrastructure and manufacturing capacity bombed to smithereens.

Government intervention put the "great" in. Otherwise it would have just been another recession.

@jackprescott9652 "Roosevelt needed Russian soldiers to beat Japan." What would that have to do with his war policy with respect to the USSR? The USSR didn't declare war on Japan until just before they capitulated. Russia fighting Japan was not even on the table when those deals were made. "I think the best for USA" I think that the best for the USA, and the world, would have been AFTER the Stalingrad crisis had been averted to have rationed aid to the USSR so they could not have advanced much. (A majority of the trucks, for instance, supporting the logistical effort behind Russia's advances on the eastern front were Studebaker trucks from the US, or built by the truck factory tooling we sent them.) Meet them at Poland's eastern border. Patton and Monty would have loved to have used that fuel and those supplies and logistics in the West.
