Not allowing folk to, or punishing folk for, saying something you don't like is breaking the rule of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is essentially about speech that somebody doesn't like. What's the meaning of "freedom of speech" that nobody objects to? That's so trivial it's not worth saying. Even in Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Soviet Union all were free to say anything that nobody objected to. Lies are bad, but nothing is as bad as government setting itself up as the arbiter of truth. Even with the most unreasonable assumption of impeccable goodwill on the part of the arbiter, his biases are going to taint the arbitration. And your principles of government must be robust in the face of human imperfection on the part of your officials because you have no perfect persons to recruit for government or anything else. You cannot set up such a power, because nobody can wield it without being corrupted, and it is the sort of position that draws to it the already corrupt. It is a defining vice of despotism. The side that tries to settle a question of fact by the use of force is the obscurantist side, every time. That's how you know you're the bad guy.
